A sandstorm looks like delaying the result, and there may have to be a recount in some areas, but the latest Iraqi elections look very promising.
The signs are that they’re much more nuanced than anyone had a right to expect even a few months ago, with the Sunnis delivering
the biggest suprise. It looks as though their hard-liners may have failed in their bid to have the consitution vetoed by mobilising fellow Sunnis to vote it down en bloc (more…)

357,000 “meals ready to eat ” are sitting uneaten in an Arkansas warehouse at a cost of £9,000 a day in storage fees. The meals were donated to the Americans by the British to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. (more…)
