A sandstorm looks like delaying the result, and there may have to be a recount in some areas, but the latest Iraqi elections look very promising.
The signs are that they’re much more nuanced than anyone had a right to expect even a few months ago, with the Sunnis delivering
the biggest suprise. It looks as though their hard-liners may have failed in their bid to have the consitution vetoed by mobilising fellow Sunnis to vote it down en bloc To do that they need to win three Iraqi provinces and [early signs are](http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4)that they’ve succeeded in just two. It threatens to be the most helpful, hopeful and happy news to come out of the country for many months.
