Lawrence of Arabia     2005-10-14

I’ve never really taken to motor bikes since a BSA Bantam, a large unfriendly hedge and myself came together at the tender age of 10. Since that day I’ve always looked back. Hasn’t stopped me admiring pictures of the [Brough Superior SS100](http://www.motosolvang.com/bike_windows/1932_brough1.html) which looks to be the star exhibit at the Lawrence of Arabia exhibition just opened at the [Imperial War Museum](http://london.iwm.org.uk/server.php?show=nav.00b) in London. You can hear it [here](http://www.antiquemotorcycle.org/TheClub/museum/ex_mus/TheBikes/1929%20Brough/29%20Brough.html) and, judging from the number of sites devoted to this machine, it is almost as big a star now as it was in its heyday when it was certainly almost as famous as the great man himself. Apart from being very quick these machines were hand made, scarce, desirable and like most big bikes of their day, distinctly dangerous. A [German soldier came to a nasty end](http://www.dropbears.com/m/models/brough/brough680.htm) on one in Holland and Lawrence too, of course ,was killed riding his Brough. Their brakes were their biggest problem. They weren’t much good apparently.
